The good looks of this pub strike you as soon as you arrive, and the welcoming rustic style continues inside. As for the food, the story here is one of fresh, locally supplied produce, cooked to order by awardwinning chefs – as evidenced in starters such as homemade local lamb sheek kebabs served with red onion, coriander and tomato salad and drizzled with yoghurt, mint and cucumber dressing. The pan-fried scallops on rocket and watercress salad with crème fraiche and sweet chilli dressing was a similarly engaging dish, boasting unfussy presentation and clear flavours. At the Staff Of Life, listen closely and the overwhelming sound you’ll hear will be murmurs of satisfaction. Order the belly pork roasted with sage, onion and garlic, served on raisin mash with peppered green beans, black pudding and red wine jus, and you’ll be murmuring right along with the rest of them. Local butchers Joseph Morris proudly supply the beef, lamb and pork, mainly from local farms – it is then beautifully prepared by the chefs, and is doubtless one of the reasons this friendly gastropub enjoys such unrivalled success.
Desserts are the territory of Linda O’Neill, joint-owner, confectionary designer and member of the Irish Panel of Chefs – so you’d expect them to be just as good as they truly are. Her handmade lemon and raspberry tart with rich vanilla ice cream is the stuff of dreams – perfectly balanced, immaculately presented and almost as naughty as the milk and praline chocolate fondant with hot chocolate sauce. From the expansive wine list, a bottle of wonderfully spicy South African Groote Post merlot delivers elegance and generosity to the palate, with a silky texture that comes from carefully ripened fruit, making it the ideal accompaniment to what can only be described as the ideal meal, at a fantastic country pub.
